I think Mr. Carter has produced the first, if not the first, then the first in a long time, of a dedicated phono amp.
Obviously, this HAS to be the best approach: completely separate system for phono playback and if desired (who can get by without?) a separate chain for digital.
BUT, this is expensive.
I will have to be happy with a combo system. When I eventually make the move to the K&K phono amp (counting the days) and use it with Dave Davenport's EXTREME line stage I believe I will get close. I doubt I will ever have the opportunity to hear the ART AUDIO device so ignorance is bliss.
I know, after my last month's experience with the RAKK DAC II and the EXTREME that I will be very happy. As I listen I think I am very lucky to be experiencing this level of quality.
Looking at the pictures in the article and within the K&K site it is quite obvious these units are the work of the same guy (duh!) But, I do not think Mr. Carter pulled any punches with the K&K device. Other that not having an output stage you are getting something really fine, that if you are like me, would not be available to you, otherwise.
I do notice there is a tighter spec for RIAA deviations, though Mr. Carter made it sound that much of the deviation spec for the K&K device is due to a deliberate roll-off in the low frequencies.
I guess we can try our hand at bettering the unit's fidelity to this very important curve.
My only other reaction is THANKS,
Rick McInnis
