Announcing the Raleigh Audio SB3 power supply kit

The SB3 is a Minimal Reactance Power Supply; similar to the RAKK dac power supply except it produces 5V at 2A. It has a series regulator and massive amounts of output capacitance as well as a power line filter. An IEC power connector and low-voltage power connector (like is on the Squeezebox) is mounted on the board. You can, of course, choose to use connectors that are not mounted on the board, but these external connectors are not included with the kit. It can be wired for either 115VAC or 230VAC mains power. The price for this kit is $149.

There is an optional black metal enclosure for the SB3 power supply. This enclosure is 8.5” deep, 6.2” wide, and 3.1” high. All connectors and printing are on one plate to keep cost to a minimum. The price for the enclosure is $149.

There is an optional low-voltage power cable kit. The kit has two power plugs to mate with jacks like is on the Squeezebox and has five feet of Cardas cable. The price for the cable kit is $29.

If five people express an interest in this kit I will proceed to the prototype stage. If you are interested, respond to this note on the forum. When you respond with your interest please state if you are interested in the power supply board, or both the board and enclosure.

In the prototype stage I will produce two beta level kits, which I will offer at a reduced price. Since Anand started all of this, it is only fair that he should be one of the beta testers if he so chooses. If Anand does not want to be a beta tester, there will be two beta-level kits available. If you want to be a beta tester, contact me off-line. Anand, please contact me and let me know your decision one way or the other. The beta version will have much more capacitance on board and the capability to select different amounts of capacitance. The beta test will involve assembling the board, listening to the effect of the power supply with the Squeezebox and selecting different amounts of capacitance to determine the optimal amount.

Note that the prices are tentative, pending completion of the beta test.
