Update:
I just discovered that there is still some hum. I could not hear it before because the air pump, which is actually pretty loud, was on. It needs to be placed in another room for sure. Anyway, there is a hum which can be heard with the air pump off. It is much more subtle than the hum before the input and output grounds were tied together, but I would still like it to go away. Any ideas on how to get rid of it?
