I would like to share the results of my shielded tonearm wire experimentation so far. I'm using a Bottlehead Seduction with internally mounted 1678 SUTs. The cartridge is connected to the SUTs directly via 4 individual solid silver Van Den Hul tonearm wires. I made a shield that covers the complete tonearm wire (except for the first 4 inches or so due to using a linear tracking arm) and did NOT tie the input and output grounds of the SUTs together. The shield is a copper braid taken from a piece of Belden digital cable and grounded to the preamp's ground at the preamp end. I read about someone implementing this configuration and not experiencing any hum or noise at all.
I listened for 20 LPs or so and was pretty discouraged with the amount of hum I was experiencing, although I didn't know what the cause of the noise was. With no LP playing I could hear a very obvious hum with the volume at a normal position. Touching the turntable, tonearm shield, phonostage, or linestage would reduce the hum but it wouldn't go away completely.
Tonight I decided to tie the input and output grounds on the SUTs together. The result? No more hum at all. It's DEAD quiet with respect to hum. All I hear now is tube rush with the volume cranked. LPs seem to have much less surface noise now. The hum just added more noise on top of the surface noise which made the total background noise unbearable.
The shield is still in place on the tonearm wire. The next step of the experiment is going to involve removing the shield to see if noise increases.
