The original power supply can supply the 240mA, but in doing so the power transformer gets hot (>65 degrees C). We are of the opinion that this is unsafe from a product life standpoint, hence the larger (x2) power transformer in the new supply. An original power supply can be made to be adequately safe by replacing the original 5VA transformer with the same voltage 7.5VA part that has the same pin spacing. However, Dave's listening trials (I heard it, too) verified the sonic value of adding substantially more output bypass capacitance than supplied on the original PS board to get the optimal result. That additional capacitance won't fit on the original PS board.
