Step-Up Transformer for .8 mV Cartridge?

Will a 23 db step-up transformer work with a .8 mV MC cartridge?
Will this generate too much gain and make the sound unnatural or just not right?
Is there a power level for an MC cartridge beyond which a step-up tansformer would not be advised? Have I reached the limit with a .8 mV cart?
