Before getting the Raleigh Audio linestage, I used a transformer attenuator based pre-amp.
The RA is better. More alive. It has better timing. The transformer attenuators always sounded slightly slow. This lack of pace was subtle but was always present, was heard in various different systems, and was confirmed by other people at two different DIY audio get-togethers. The transformer attenuators were always beaten in direct A-B comparisons against passive resistive attenuators. I know this goes against what other inmates have found. Because of the widespread praise for TAs here on the AA, I persevered with the TAs for about 18 months. I should have trusted my own hearing.
Before that I used a single-ended transformer-coupled pre, which I still have, and I prefer the RA over that pre-amp also.
