My BDT power amp is up and running using cheap Hammond Iron, I would like to upgrade it to something really good. The Lundahl ITs are perfect for this, but I need some help with the OPTs. This design needs something in the 10k-15k range PP on the primary to standard speaker range. The 1620 sounds like it will fit the bill but this is a 1.5 watt amp, the 1620 seems like way overkill. I know it will probably work fine, but it seems like a waste to use something designed for 250 watts with a 1.5 watt amp!
I'm also looking at a completely different output configuration. With Nelson Passes paper on current drive that came out recently there has been a lot of talk about driving speakers like my Lowthers from a current drive amp. This BDT amp is a perfect candidate for this, it needs to run at a higher impedance than usual. In this case its 15kPP into 47ohms, it looks like the 1680 will do exactly that. Can I use the 1680 in this way? Will it handle 1.5 watts? The 1680s are also a little cheaper than the 1620s (a good thing!) The stabding current is a whopping 10mA on each side which is well within the 1680 spec. It will have about 120V AC on the primary worst case which sounds like it will be within the output spec. Thanks,
John S.
