Rick,For your reference, a 1:2 transformer ratio normally yields 6dB of gain. A 2:1 connection effects 6dB of attenuation. 3:1 gives about 10dB of attentuation and 4:1 12dB. As you surmise, you can use this property to do some level matching in a relatively coarse way.
If you have a transformer output in your preamp, then you can use transformers at the inputs to your amplifiers in the fashion you describe. There are many Lundahl transformers that will work for your purpose. My favorites are the LL1544A, LL1674, and LL1676, but others will work if you need other ratios to get different attenuation.
