Any microphone needs proper impedance termination and a resistor is usually put across the secondary of the input transformer to load the mic appropriately. The wrong loading will potentially result in uneven frequency response. Perhaps this is what you are hearing. With a 1:10 step-up ratio, the 5K resistor looks like 50 ohms to the mic, which is a bit low. Try a 50K resistor and see how it sounds.
