If you want to lose gain, then why 1:8 or 1:4, which imply significant gain? In general, step-up ratios of more than 1:2 aren't recommended at the input to a tube amplifier unless you can guarantee that the driving impedance is very low (<200 ohms or so, depending on the amplifier input tube used). Otherwise the interaction with the input Miller capacitance will cause sonic effects that are frequency dependent.
