Re: DAC I/V conversion

Well I have spent the last day and a half studying I/V solutions. To put it in a nutshell, I/V conversion in all of these articles is done with a resistor: either a resistor directly on the DAC current output, a feedback resistor in the op-amp or an output resistor in the transimpedance amplifier. The amplifiers provide the zero input impedance that the DAC current output wants to see.

So, we have a tradeoff. The aberrations caused by an other than zero impedance load versus the aberrations caused by the amplifier. I might add that the Hawksford paper provides a convincing argument that the design of the amplifier is not trivial. This is supported by Jocko's comments over on the diyAudio board.

So where are we? We have a resistor solution that sounds excellent. We have listened to FET and op-amp solutions that are sonically inferior. We have not yet auditioned a transimpedance amplifier. We could go forward with the excellent solution that we have in hand or we could churn for months looking for a better solution. It makes the most sense to go forward with the excellent solution in hand.

I have a couple of ideas that will take some (how much I don't know) development time and if they pan out we can offer an upgrade. But don't hold your breath. It still comes down to what we have now is the best that I have heard anywhere to date.

Dave
