1660/10ma 1:1 0r 1:2?

66.167.78.5

Greetings experts,
For a long time I've been puzzled about why most SE circuits have so much gain or sensitivity to go to full power with less than 1v input. Sadly my system is CD only at this time, so I'm trying to accomodate this environment as best I can. My (older) Wadia brand CD player (no big deal) puts out up to 4V.
so, I've been progressively making lower and lower gain amps. Now I'm driving a 300B through a 1660/10ma hooked up 1:2. I've tried paralled 6SN7, 5687, 7119, thinking that I had to keep the plate resistance low, and limiting current to less than 20ma. I STILL have more gain than I need!!! I don't listen loud, more "critically". So I thought maybe re-wiring the IT for 1:1, but then 10ma max only, and I'm lost now about how much the Rp should/could be??
I thought 37, 56, 256, 76, 6P5 or? or could I use an 801 with1:2 pulling only 20ma. Does 2-4V input overload any of these grids? Does a Jensen (for example) input trans 1:1 or 2:1 help here? Do they really help eliminate digital hash at HF? or is it a dream????
