1544a as phase splitter

I noticed that Mr. Davenport (in his line amp) as well as Kevin (in his power amps) seem to prefer the 1674/1676 in phase splitter duty. Could you explain the reasoning? Could the 1544a be used instead if the correct turn ration is used, and what would be lost (compared to 1674/6) in performance? In a somewhat less expensive amp, such as Kevins PPP EL84, would it not be acceptablle to use the slightly lower cost 1544a. Or is there a better low cost alternative in the Lundahl lineup.

Thanks,
Francois
