Thank you Kevin, for the excellent answers. Just to make sure I understand one thing, though...In your example, the cascoded MOSFETs only need perhaps 10-12 volts of drop to function properly, but drop 85v at the set current because the tube requires 85 volts of negative grid bias to operate at the set current.
If I then place a 500 Ohm resistor between the "-" terminal and ground, would the CCS start dropping 35V instead of 85V, while maintaining its other operating parameters, assuming 35V is above the voltage required for normal operation?
