Mark,The deal with this transformer is really related to the application. In the Amity, the LL1544A serves the dual purpose of phase splitting and gain. With a 1:2 step-up ratio, the source impedance of the line preamp is multiplied by 4, hence Lynn's recommendation of a low driving impedance. I now use either the LL1676 or the new LL1684 for this purpose, because they are larger, but that doesn't change the source impedance requirement.
If you have the gain, I agree with your idea, but I would use the LL1676 instead connected for 2:1 stepdown. If you use a fully differential stage at the front end of the amplifier, you don't need to do any phase splitting there. If you don't have the gain, then add another stage to the amp to get it. See the input stage schematic on my web page for ideas. Getting gain using a transformer can be managed, but it is better to avoid it if you can. Only where the source impedance is low, as with an MC cartridge, is it without apparent cost.
