I can tell you how I have done it and let others tell their stories.I have made preamps two ways. The Total Phono Preamp Kit puts everything in one box (see www.par-metal.com 10 series enclosures). The power supply components have their own steel internal box, which is on the right, to shield the phono circuitry from power transformer leakage magnetic fields. The PS board is in the middle and the phono boards are on the left side of the chassis. I have also built a few custom units in smaller enclosures (see www.lansingenclosures.com for half rack width enclosures), with the PS magnetics and PS board in one box and the phono boards in the other. These cases are partly aluminum, so care in siting them on your rack is required to minimize hum. The kit instructions show how such a thing is wired up with an "umbilical" cable.
