If you can give me a bit more information on the Foreplay and the Darling 1626, I can answer more definitively. I need to know the gain of these pieces.Reducing the value of the FET source resistor from its standard 29 ohms to 10 ohms will do it.
I am afraid that locating the tube off the board is not really the best idea. You could turn the board upside down, mount it under the chassis with the heatsinks facing down and put short jumpers from the tube socket to the board pads. However, with a high gain circuit like a phono preamp, the additional lead length may result in instability.
Why not just light up the tube of your choice on the top of the chassis and conceal the real tube underneath nicely nestled on its board?
