I am sorry, but that is simply not true. It merely gives you the bad parts of both and non of the good.

The key part of attenuator autoformers or transformers is that you do not get the added resistance of the Pot/Stepped attenuator. As long as you use resistive elements to do the attenuation, you might as well leave the transformer out, unless it has another job in the bargain.

If you don't believe, try borrowing an MF Audio passive preamp and compare.
