MC Step Up Questions (fairly long)

Hi,
This is a continuation of some questions I raised over at the VA. I have a K&K MC Step Up running into the phono stage of my tube integrated. Lately, I've been experimenting with some more expensive (for me) MC cartridges that I have purchased used (since it is virtually impossible to audition multiple MCs in a store these days). The Step Up is currently wired for max. gain, 26 db/100ohm. Right now, I have a VDH Frog (0.6mv) and a Benz L2 (0.3mv). I'm considering trying a few others if I can find a good deal (possibly Clearaudio, Dyna, Shelter). I have way too much gain for the VDH and about right for the Benz, although I could probably step down in gain even with the Benz since it is still louder at a given setting than any of the MMs I've used without the step up. That was also the case with a 0.5mv Goldring Elite I had for awhile. VDH recommends loading at 500 ohms; Benz is not specific in their instructions on loading. I probably would be better off re-wiring the step up to 20db or less of gain if I keep the VDH and maybe to 20db if I keep the Benz. My questions are, do any of you have any experience using the K&K Step Up with either VDH or Benz cartridges? Even if not, I would be interested in your opinions of how the Step Up matched with other cartridges and the settings you chose. Also, someone at the VA suggested that each MC step up tends to have one setting that is preferable to the others as far as sound. Just curious if that is your experience with the K&K, and if so, which setting you have found to sound better overall (realizing that this may vary by cartridge). Thanks,

TLH
