It is certainly possible to use an output transformer gapped for SE use for a PP amplifier. The implicit trade-off in doing so is that the bass cut-off frequency will be relatively high compared to what it would have been with a transformer gapped for push-pull use. However, it will be no worse than it was when used SE.
