HiOne thing to remember when looking at the LAB sum measurements is that they were taken outdoors, away from any walls or obstructions, a true “Half spaceâ€.
When one places a Lab horn against a wall, one has in effect doubled its effective mouth area (like having two horns in half space). Getting it into a corner cuts the radiation space in half again, in effect like having 4 in halfspace). In addition to these, one can sometimes place the horn in the right position to to actually use the room corner as a horn extension. While this latter thing would seem to be an automatic consequence of being in a corner, its not. To be a low frequency horn, one needs a specific rate of expansion, this rate is part of the horns “high pass†filter.
A room corner is a conical horn, like all conical horns it starts out with a very rapid expansion which gets slower the further one gets from the apex. To effectively use the room corner, one must model the expansion of the path from the horns mouth as it expands into the room.
Our new Bdeap is of that design, intended to use boundaries, acoustic or physical.
Lastly, a room made of concrete, sealed air tight has a +12 dB per octave rise in its response once one is below the lowest room mode (at about the point just below where the longest room dimension is ½ wl).
This makes the sealed box roll off of –12 dB per octave a perfect match for this room gain resulting in “free bass extension†to a few Hz.
Real rooms are more like +3 to + 6 dB per octave room gain slope so with the horns sealed box ultimate roll off makes the low end lift up compared to out doors and better than a vented box so far as VLF extension.
At AVS-Forum.com, a fellow put 2 Bdeaps in his cinema and with modest EQ, was able to get flat to 11Hz. The thread is under “subwoofer leviathan†or something, search on “Bdeap†if interestedAnyway, the point is the Bdeap uses a VERY similar driver to the LAB 12. You will be able to scare people with even one in a living room.
Cheers,Tom Danley
