Hello Bare,past January I made a big coupling capacitor listening comparison.
a lot ot fancy/famous caps were in this test.
Test device was a solid state preamp (Kanéda from L'Audiophile, Paris, approved premium quality components only) with 100 mV across the coupling cap, worst case situation TME as caps love more than only some Volts across them.Meanwhile several buddies have tried out the results, also in speaker XO and in general they followed my results.
In my test the Hovland exposed spectacular bass and treble, but sounded hoarse and not open; sometimes I was not sure whether distortion happens. Detail resolution was spectacular but artificial. Tone colour plausibility was low. No sound of ambience nearly no sound of air vaibrating around the instruments. Macrodynamics were spectacular, microdynamics were fair. Rythmic coherence was ok. THe worst thing with this cap was: music was boring. My notes read I stopped the listening test after two record sides: boring.
The test revealed the Siemens/Epcos MKV B25839 (0.5 uF/400V) as oustannding, undisputed winner of my test. This cap did everything right so far, audio buddies who know it rave about it. I do not retype my enthusing notes here (two pages of text) but I can tell you that the sound was utterly open over the whole frequency range.
This cap is not HiFi, it is music. Very high sustain of listener's focus, highly involving and seductive, it made me wish to dance, foot tapping, body rocking, sometimes I felt like leaving my body. And on the Chopin piano recording I had the impression of seeing the yellow-metallic paint the piano's frame is painted with, so realistic was the sound.To my and my buddies' experience, all MKV caps of the numbers B25834, B25835 and B25839 play in this league. Unfortunately values are available only in coarse steps.
If you can get them from your local electronics distributor, maybe you try them out.
