I find most rap music to be so-bass heavy that I "reengineer" the sound by switching to a back-up DIY car subwoofer (in my living room) for rap music only. When used in my large living room, that "car subwoofer" has bass roll-off of 12dB/octave below 50Hz. (originally designed for a car with cabin gain of about 12dB/octave below 50Hz.)
In addition, I eliminate three bass peaks that would otherwise be heard at my listening seat, by using a Behringer digital parametric EQ.
I have found over many years that some bass roll off under 50Hz., and eliminating all bass peaks under 70Hz. (top limit of my subwoofer), really helped make rap and techno bass CD basslines sound reasonable in my living room, rather than boomy with so much bass output it's hard to understand the words, which is the whole point of rap, right?
When I switch back to my regular DIY subwoofer, which is also equalized, but is flat down to to 25Hz. (rather than 50Hz.), the bass becomes so loud that it dominates the song, and partially obscures the lyrics, that are not exactly poifect diction to begin with!
BassNut's 'Party Blaster' DIY car subwoofer is used only for rap music, and for loud parties to protect my main subwoofer from drunk friends.
It uses one Kove Audio Z15D 15inch driver with a +/-20mm XMAX, mounted externally on the top a sealed two cubic foot enclosure, firing down into a 1" MDF enclosure stuffed with 2.5 cubic feet of polyester fill ... and has popped several nails out of nearby plasterboard walls, which is my primary indicator of party success, along with short 'Elapsed time until a neighbor calls the Police' & 'Elapsed time before someone has to be rushed to the emergency room' metrics.
