RE: For the Noobz

Glad you asked as this is a new direction for most of us.

Our system now might be something like this:
CD transport/DAC>>Linestage>>amplifier>>speakers

Objective: replace our CD transport with music served from a computer.

So we use a program like EAC or DBpoweramp CD ripper to 'rip' our CD collection to our hard drive in lossless format (ie FLAC format is popular and widely available).

Now we need to play it back but avoid the computer's on board sound card and Windows playback software. So we install a program like Foobar or MediaPortal. This allows us to select 'ASIO' playback which streams the music data direct to the USB port, lossless and bit perfect AND bypassing computer sound cards and Windows related software.

Our existing DAC may not have a USB input so we need a device to interface between the computer and DAC: this device has a USB input and a RCA or BNC output. It converts the bit perfect data stream from the computer to a digital signal compatible with DAC inputs. Downstream from the DAC is our existing hifi setup.

The Morello is that interface device. Whatever is lost here is lost forever so quality is very important:
If the original is 24bit 192khz it needs to perform that task without adding jitter, truncating bits, or passing along noise. The Morello L1 adds chokes and extra power supply filtering, has circuit tweeks to bring the output to optimum level, and has output transformers up to the task at hand. Also proper 75ohm cabling and jacks are used. The Morello L3 has its own clock, powersupply, and circuit mods packaged in a standalone chassis to perform its task even more competently.

If just playing music ripped from CD then any DAC should work as well or better than with the CD transport (providing the computer is setup with the correct hardware and software settings). But if we have purchased HD music (higher than 16bit/44khz) online then we will will need to have a DAC which can receive that data at it native sampling rate and bit depth. Or a DAC that is non-oversampling (it will play HD files but will truncate them to 16/44).

We will soon have a DAC that will perform both functions, conversion and DAC, at 24bit/192khz.

regards

Brian
