Mic gain stage needed

I have an unusual application where I need to bump the gain a bit on a microphone before inserting it into the PA system. All I need is a box with an XLR in, an XLR out, and a level control knob in between. I'm wondering if this is something that could be easily assembled from parts at the local Rat Shack. Is this doable? Is it worth the hassle?
