That's good to hear. Did the hum go after it warmed up or was it just gone when you turned it on this time? If it hums when cold but not when it warms up it sounds like there might be a loose connection somewhere (as the metal heats and expands the connection gets better).

In my old EL34 days I used the JJ EL34 which I found had a bit more punch than the VAs. But they were very unreliable. I hear the JJ E34L is much better sounding though. Check the Tubes Asylum and you'll find loads of threads discussing the "best" EL34. With 95dB you don't need KT88's, but the Gold Lion Genelex KT88 re-issues are very, very good.
