Driving a Lux

I am considering the Lux amplifier, to be driven by a CD player with valve output stage. Does the Lux need an active preamp like the Basie or is it ok with a passive dvice such as a PEC potentiometer or stepped attenuator? I seem to remember reading that the LadyDay sounded better with the Basie.
