I haven't tried the 4ohm taps for a long time. I did with an older amp but not the Ella, and not since I changed the speaker's crossovers. I should give it a go again, although I remember I didn't like it as much then. I can't remember why though!
We did an interesting change to a friend's Joplin. Took the wires from the transformer to a switch on the back (where the old input selector switch was - this was a Django'd Joplin) and from there to the speaker outputs. So he could switch between 4 and 8 ohms at will. Of course you need a switch that can handle the load.
Which B&W's do you have? If they are the old Matrix you really should change the crossovers. It makes a huge difference.
