Using my old turntable overseas

Hi - I was hoping somebody could provide an answer to this question for me, as I am not an expert by any means...

I have just relocated from the UK to the US. All my stuff is coming in a container quite soon, including my beloved old Garrard turntable (very carefully packed!)

Now, because (as I said) I'm a bit thick when it comes to technical matters, I was kind of hoping that I could just plug it into one of these things, and all would be well (see link below):

However, one of my friends looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "It'll never work - the turntable won't spin round at the right speed."

Can somebody explain to me (imagine you are explaining it to a 5 year old here) - is this statement true - the turntable speed will be affected? If so, why? And what are my options here? Would it be best to get a specialist to put a US motor in it or something?

Thanks to anyway who can help me on this one.
