I probably posted a schematic of the mods I did years ago. the links may be dead now.
basically, the idea is to replace the 15K(?), shared cathode resistor on the 6sn7 long-tailed pair with a constant current device of some type. this makes the impedance at the cathode very, very high and helps balance the signals off of the phase splitter. You also need to use matched load resistors on the 6sn7's once you do this. i'm using a mosfet cascode CCS, but there are many ways to do this.
im not disagreeing with you that a bridge rectifier sounds better, but i have no idea why this would be so. really the only difference is that the half wave rectifier has 60hz ripple, while the bridge has 120hz. current handling and regulation are not really an issue for the bias supply.
