I visited and toured the U.S.S Constitution ("Old Ironsides") today. Some may not realize that this 212 year old ship is still commissioned and manned by the United States Navy. I'm getting more reflective as I stare down the barrel at 60. I loved seeing this wonderful ship but what struck me was how young the men and women in uniform are. Some looked like they belonged in Junior High School. As I approach the sunset of my life I find it more and more obscene to send these children into harm's way. I think it would be wonderful that no one, under the age of 50. could enlist and serve. Perhaps there would be less of a desire to go to war. I do know these young people should be enjoying the wonder of life's youth and not consigned to battle theaters. :-(

I share your sentiments.

It would change the face of war to have those responsible for allowing it pay the price.

It never made sense that if Congress was too cowardly and irresponsible to even declare war (following the law), that our children must pay for the error of failed foreign policies.

If we start fighting wars with senior citizens, we'll soon be taken over by another country who does not have that policy. Nothing against senior citizens, but they're not very good for soldiering.

It's not the young ones who decide to send these kids to war, it's the older supposedly smarter ones who do. Too often they have never faced that possibility themselves and therefore really don't know what's it like to serve in harm's way.

I was referring to presidents, senators, and congressmen. Senior uniformed personnel at least know what it's like to serve, and they don't get to those positions without being very good at what they do.

Too bad they weren't very coercing 8 years ago. This makes for interesting reading concerning those who sent our people to fight and die.

Hey Wendell,

Hope you're having fun in our city. I'm sitting in my office in 111 Huntington Ave as I type this. It's the R2D2 looking domed building next to the tall, ugly Prudential Tower.

Regards,

Josh

P.S. I'd congratulate you on the Yankees' victory, but it would be a hollow, insincere congratulations, so I won't. :-)

I need to come back and spend much more time. America was truly born here and you can see it almost everywhere. A few days don't do it justice.
