I live in NW Wyoming, about 100 miles south of Billings, Montana. Billings is the largest city in the Northern Rockies and offers great crate digging opportunities. Here's a photo tour of yesterday's visit to Billings:

First stop is Montana Rescue Mission on Wicks Avenue. Score! It's gonna be a good day. :-)

Granny's Attic on Minnesota Avenue is a huge antique mall in an old warehouse.

There's thousands of records here. Most of it picked over TUC (the usual crap). Must've seen about 30 or 40 Evie albums. :-(

I spent too much time at Granny's Attic, but did find these keepers.

Roger's place is just down the street from Granny's Attic. Roger is a collector who operates a recycling business. He's got a bunch of records and I've bought some nice ones in the past, but nothing today.

The display racks show promise at Salvation Army, also on Minnesota Ave.

Score! A NM copy of Tamboo, and a few others....

The other Salvation Army finds. The Wagner 5x LP box set is a NM German pressing with tulips-rim label. Total cost here was $2.63. This can be a cheap hobby. :-)

The display rack at St. Vincents on Montana Ave. I left "Candy-O" for the next lucky crate digger, but....

I did walk away with a stereo UK pressing of "Black Satin."

While I was snapping this photo on 29th Street, a bum across the street hollered "Hey! Take my picture." I was tempted, and I do enjoy meeting guys like this, but I was on a mission and wanted to keep moving.

Nothing but TUC here at MRM. Look quick and move on.

Ernie November is my top MUST VISIT shop in Billings. Some of my best and most memorable scores have been here.

The display racks at Ernie November. Some fresh inventory and I'm finding some great stuff. Beat cover on Trout Mask Replica, but the discs are NM.

Bad Brains, Dayglo Abortions, and Minutemen are from the new vinyl section at Ernie November. Priced at $10-$13 each (before my discount). Who says new vinyl has to be expensive?

Whoo Hoo! Some choice used LPs from EN, all NM wax and priced less than five bucks a pop.

The last two used LPs from EN. Time to move on....

A sorry selection of TUC at St. Vincent's on Grand Ave. Nothing to buy here.

The MRM store on 24th. I almost passed it by as the last visit here was pointless.... two dozen beat to crap LPs. But this time....

There were about 800 records to dig through. Score! Billie Holiday 78s and a ten incher. There were a lot of very interesting looking early stereo Westminster Classical LPs. Sadly, I had to pass due to condition issues.

"Hot Topic" is a store at the Rimrock Mall featuring weird stuff for kids. The tattooed staff usually approaches me thinking I'm hopelessly lost or a parent looking to buy weird stuff for their kid. I always freak them out when I start pulling Punk LPs out of the racks and start talking about music.

The finds from Hot Topic: Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique, D.I. - Richard Hung Himself (half price at $6.98), and Tool - Undertow.

Late afternoon and the last stop is the Goodwill on S. 29th. One helluva fancy looking thrift shop, huh?

A meager collection of TUC at Goodwill. Nothing worth buying. So ends the day's outing as I hop in the Jeep and drive back to Wyoming.

"TUC" You gotta be kidding? I'll bet you didn't pass on the rare ray Conniff album I saw in that one photo. You know and I know locating some vintage Conniff is well worth any LP crate digging trip! :>)

Great pics, I enjoyed them and learned what is available in your area. Thanks for posting this, cactus.

Big Concrete Blonde fan here, one of my favorite bands from the 80s/90s... nice find. Johnette Napolitano has an amazing voice.

Thanks for taking us along ... I love the cove for Silver Apples on the Moon from the Salvation Army. And my goodness, that is the fanciest Goodwill exterior I've ever seen!

Hi Stephanie,

Thanks for joining me on the tour.

A little more detail on the "Silver Apples" LP....

Silver Apples Of The Moon for Electronic Music Synthesizer by Morton Subotnick
Nonesuch H-71174

How could I resist? The title is lifted from a Yeats poem, and the piece was composed and recorded specifically for this Nonesuch release. I think it will be quite interesting.

When I passed through Montana, on my way to Seatle, I could not get over how big the sky "did" look. Any thoughts. I've been looking for King Crimson "Red" for quite a while.......nice find.

Cheers,

Brad

Montana is known as "Big Sky Country." The sky there (and here in Wyoming) looks so big due to lack of trees screening the view. Although there are plentiful forests in the mountains, the lower elevations range from grassland to high desert, where a glorious sweeping panorama of sky dominates the view.

I was especially happy to find King Crimson's "Red." It, "Paul's Boutique", and "Trout Mask Replica" had been on my wants list for a long, long time. "Paul's Boutique" is a digitally remastered 180 gram "audiophile quality" reissue. I know that "digital" is a dirty word for some here, but this reissue sounds great and is of high quality, with a gorgeous quadruple gatefold cover. At $19.99, it was by far the most expensive record.

I had heard about "Big Sky Country" but couldn't appreciate it until i actually drove through. I've said it before, you do live in one spectacular part of the country. I'm envious........but not as envious as I am regarding your King Crimson find. Very cool.

Regards,

Brad

"Hello, Joe! Hello, Mr. Dunahee..hee..hee...hee..."
He did that same thing every freaking week. About as funny as a basket of warts.
Nice selection of record stores ya got there, cactus. We have Jerry's (which is great), the Attic (which is good), Eide's (acceptable), Paul's (new stuff only; mostly CDs), and HalfPrice Books. Forget about the thrifts, they don't even rise to the level of TUC.

Does this follow the Lewis and Clark trail?
Nice Diggin', wish I had been that savvy when I was out that way.

Yes, Billings is situated on the Yellowstone River, and Lewis & Clark did make their historic journey through the area.

to write a prescription for a walker/chair. Looking through crates is one of my very favorite things to do, but it gets PAINFUL!

I just never remember to ask!

Your post may make me remember that I can stand for 5 minutes at a crate of records but I can sit at dozens of crates of records for a long, long time.

Or maybe I'll just get a spine implant. I'll see if anyone's got one to spare. Already have a new hip, knee, and shoulder, why not a spine?

I remember how much fun it was to slide under tables, stomach down on a filthy floor to get at a single box of records...AHHHHH!

Somehow those finds were "better" because of the sacrifice. One time I found a large box full of 10" Jazz. I had crawled under two tables that had been placed together and the box was under a hutch (the two tables in front of it) loaded with depression glass. Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle...but thankfully no crash as my shoulder continually brushed the furniture above my head.

One thing I'm eternally grateful for is that cockroaches must not like vinyl (knock on wood). I've never brought home any little buddies, thank God!

There is no such thing as too many records.
There is just too little room for them!
