Help! I am a total plug-and-play kind of guy, so when things go wrong I pay to have them fixed.

The arm on my NAS Spacedeck has been mistracking and skipping. Also, it drifts a lot when cuing down. I took it to a local guy who is apparently able to fix these sorts of problems. When I got it home, it no longer drifts at the beginning of LPs, but continues to do so in the middle of the record. Also, it continues to skip on records that were heretofore perfect. So, I guess he fixed something, but not everything. The cartridge, a Karat, is apparently working fine.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong here. I will deal with the repair guy, so I don't need advice about that.

I'd first double check the anti-skating and VTF. Too light a VTF could cause your problem. For the drift, I'd clean the top of the cuing rest.

A preliminary check to see if it is the arm is to balance the arm so it floats and then gently blow on it so it moves through its normal range of motion. Remove the platter and put the stylus guard on first. If the arm sticks at any point, there is too much friction in the arm. Possible causes are wiring that binds, and bearing problem.

It sounds more like a cartridge problem, since a properly functioning arm shouldn't just stop working. Do you have an inexpensive backup to try?

Good luck!
