Is it just me, or is the Pines of Rome (45 rpm reissue by Classic Records) sound bright and the top end is very aggressive?

Is is supposed to be this way or a bright recording or system setup? My other well recorded and pressed LPs sound wonderful, so I don't think it is a setup issue.

I've got the re-issued 33.3 RPM version and yes ....the strings and horns are awfully brash, hard and strident at the final climax at the inner grooves.
Unless your cartridge alignment geometry is 'spot-on', it will be almost unlistenable.
Check your alignment with a Feickert, WallyTractor or similar and be VERY accurate (ie - with a magnifying glass).
Good luck.....oh and the brass with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall was hard and strident when I heard them in September with Andrea Bocchelli.

I've listened carefully to the original and SACD versions, posted on November 5, 2009 at 07:47:10

I've always thought that there was just a *touch* of metallic hardness in Appian Way, (one solo trumpet crescendo in particular), it's more pronounced on SACD than the original.

My 45 rpm of Reiner's Pictures doesn't exhibit any hardness.

Not in my experience, but..., posted on November 4, 2009 at 21:55:54

I have heard this complaint before. Maybe there was a batch that didn't come out right. I remember a friend saying that his copy was a bit 'strident in the strings.' Mine sounds good, like my reel to reel tape.

Not IMHO, though you might try a very slight VTA adjustment.
