AT-OC9 ML/II - Stylus tip is so...short and tip is not visible ?

I have just purchased a AT-OC9 ML/II from LP gear. It is supposed to be a brand new. Out of the packing box, there is no clear plastic cartridge stylus protection cover...??? My AT-33ML used to have one.

To compare with my original AT-OC9 (not ML/II) I have found that the tip of the ML/II's stylus is so little and so short(tip is even not visible).

Have I purchased a wear-out cartridge or the ML/II version is like that ?

Can somebody else who own the OC9 ML/II help to provide me the aspect of your stylus tip.

Well sonically, the newly opened OC9 ML/II is not catching up the resolution and dynamic of the AT-33ML/OCC, which I have used for 10 years.(Seldom use) I thought the OC9/ML/II would be better than AT33ML.

Regards,

Eric

Tiny Tip and It's Sensitive To Proper Arm Matching........., posted on November 5, 2009 at 03:01:27

Member Bry loaned me his so i could try a MC on my new Preamp. I installed in in a 1200 series Technics shell, tried in on all three of my modded technics tables Two Sl1800MKI's and my SL1700MKII and it sound like crap. So before I sent it back to Bry I thought I'd give it a spin on my SL1100A and it blew me away at how good this cartridge sounded. The 1100A is a very large and heavy table arm is a bit heavier that the 1200Series arm but the sound was day/night difference. Does make me wonder why yours came without a stylus guard though.

I've owned one. The diamond is tiny, tiny, tiny! You can't see it with the naked eye. I even looked at it with a 10X jewelers loupe and I could BARELY see it. It should have a plastic stylus cover though.

It's normal for anyone aged 40 plus..., posted on November 4, 2009 at 20:32:45

We can only tell the condition of a stylus under a microscope or with any high power magnifications, especially for those micro styli. Some of their radii could be as small as 3µm x 30µm. Both size and shape of the stylus affect the performance of a cart though there are some other factors.

For your reference, a standard Denon DL-103R has its stylus radius specified on manual at 0.2mm(200µm).

I agree with other inmates that we should only judge a cartridge after fully breaking it in.

The sound of the OC9 changes quite a bit in the first 25 hours. -nt, posted on November 4, 2009 at 18:16:12

The cantilever seems to be a bit short, but obviously designed that way.

...the subject stylus is still considered in good/new shape(diamond nicely polished, stylus "firmly" set, in regard to its price range) though we can clearly see some "glue" surrounding the stylus. For this kind of micro ridge or micro line or any micro styli, in fact, some of manufacturers would choose to bond/glue the diamond tip on the cantilever. Of course, this bond/glue, which is quite common in diamond setting industry, shouldn't affect the stylus contact with the groove and should last for a very long time if cleaning properly.

Here is another photo of micro ridge stylus for your reference. Due to different cantilever design, however, the stylus has been set without any bond/glue on the outside.

Best regards
Dan

is touching the cartridge body rather than angling away from it.

Mike, it's just the angle as this is not a perfect sideview. nt, posted on November 7, 2009 at 11:48:03
