Well, it was a bit difficult to find some great Bruckner performances in STEREO, but I believe these are certainly gems that folks should be on the look out for....I was really surprised by how good the late 70s HVK Nos 5 and 8 are....floppy discs and all!!

Jochum's No.9 is about my favorite stereo effort...I'm totally sold on his earlier Mono recording ....come to think of it....his mono No.7 is amazing as well.

It's not suprising, that I prefer my Bruckner in mono for the most part....Jochum, Knappertsbusch, Furtwangler, etc etc...........but today I have the Ruby set up....so it's time to revisit some of these great recordings that I rarely play....Bruno and Otto!!! I forgot how good they are..........

Tom, I am surprised you didn't mention Walter's 9th. I just happened to listen to that tonight, actually. My favorite Bruckner conductor is Giulini, but as far as I know they are unfortunately only available on CD. If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know! His 7th with Vienna is incredible.

This 6th is fantastic. I can't thing in a best example of what "Maestoso" must be. I have all the Bruckner Klemperer recorded for EMI. His late recording of the 9th (1970) is not very expensive and worth every cent you pay. The 9th's Adagio sounds like other galaxy music!
The Schuricht's ASD is veeeery expensive but there is a Testament 180gr reissue. Any coments about this?

I have the Testament 9th. It is outstanding sonically and a very good pressing. In fact, all the Testament pressings I have are esceptional. The 9th is OOP, though, and seems hard to find.

do you mean the Schuricht 3rd? I think this is still available. I don't know any 9th on Testament.

Oh yes. I've never seen this record before. So it must be very difficult to find... I'll get the third now.
Thanks!

Bruckner's music always strikes me as combining great power with great delicacy and, for lack of a better term, sprituality. It's a rare conductor who can balance these qualities; in my opinion, Jochum was one of them. And Jochum's complete Bruckner cycle in stereo is pretty good, too (Deutsche Grammophon SK 929-39). He's conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (#'s 1, 4, 7, 8, 9) and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (#'s 2, 3, 5, 6). Sound is at minimum very good--at least on the tulip pressings in my box set.

I definitely agree with you that Walter, Schuricht, and Karajan were outstanding Brucknerians. Based only on my exposure to his 4th with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra (Pro Arte PAL 1044; originally a Harmonia Mundi LP, I believe), I also think Gunter Wand had a great feel for old Anton's music.

That Schuricht is one hell of a performance.

If you ever see a vinyl of the Karajan 80's VPO eighth, grab it (it'll be pricey). I have only the VPO 7th - his last recording - on vinyl, and it is awesome.

The fifth in stereo to look for is the Kempe Munich on BASF IMO.

This is my single favorite Bruckner recording....I did not know it had ever been released on vinyl.

Karajan, in the last few years before he died, made some of his best recordings ever, with the VPO.

It was, but near the end of DG vinyl, so in very low quantities, and only in Europe, I only have been able to find a vinyl copy of the 7th that came out a year after the 8th. Frickin' awesome.

Recommendations duly noted......love your Custom 45 amp built by James Burgess....must sound very nice. I'm sold on my 2A3 SET Mono Blocks. I just realized...I've had them 8 years to the month!
