I've always liked the look of WLP (white label promo). I've got a couple thousand WLP 78s, a few hundred 45s and a lesser number on LP. WLP often exhibit superior sound quality, as they're usually the first pressings off the stampers. Many of my WLP 78s are pressed on vinyl and are exceptionally fine. Here's a small sampling:

My very first lp was a WLP of My Fair Lady played for years on one of these,,,, posted on November 3, 2009 at 20:56:43

go to the expense. They simply rubber stamped them "Preview" or "Review". Blue Note and Prestige were among them. The results, however, were/are the same. Earliest/best pressings. Columbia, for one, had several different ways of indicating preview copies

Lots of cryin' goin' on at AA homes tonight.

There is no such thing as too many records.
There is just too little room for them!

Gotta admit I shed a few when I sold the mono WLP I had.

I felt having both was... somewhat greedy...

And the $ went to a good cause, successfully battling
Fergus' cancer.

Of course, his attitude is:

It's good to see your vinyl to even better use than originally intended.

Such is the transitionary nature of "stuff".
Enjoy and appreciate it while you have it.
Or (I guess) - smoke 'em if you got 'em.

I had to auction off many rare records that
most likely I'll never see/own again.

That's alright as I have plenty more
and Fergus is still here to keep things
in perspective.

And get cat hairs all over our stuff!

About two years ago, I got a call from a fellow in Sheridan, WY who stated he had "7,700 records in my garage and I need to get rid of them." So I hooked up a box trailer to my Jeep and headed over the Bighorn Mountains to take a look. I bought the entire lot. It took two trips to haul them all back home.

There were closer to 10,000 records in the lot. Many of the 78s were clearly radio station inventory, dating from the early to mid 50s. Of those promos, many are pressed in vinyl. Overall, the sound quality is excellent, as good as if not better than 45s and LPs from that era.

Here's a batch of WLP 78s I pulled out of boxes to photograph:

The vast majority of MGM promos I've got are yellow label, similar to retail copies but with "Disk Jockey" printed on them. So this WLP MGM is unusual.

Not very common, but I've got a few yellow label Capitol and RCA promos.

Decca and Coral labels used pale blue and pink in addition to white for promo labels.

Pardon me for changing the direction. I pursued London Calling this last weekend at a record show, no go. My anniversary CD is not cutting it. The LP was retired in the early 80's from many spins on the neighbors substandard equipment.
Is there any advantage to buying the re-release,(2004 ?) or locate an orginal promo. There seems to be some okay examples on-line.

Don't bother with the US Epic if you want the best sounding version.

Love that London Calling. I had at one time a white label Japanese press of this and it was stupid good. Funny someone had to phonetically spell out UBIQUITY on the Roy Ayers. lol.

Makes you wonder if there's a story there.
