Despite owning a scad of DG LPs I didn't realize that there was something called "Red Stereo" until recently. Apparently these were issued in the early 60s. Anybody know anything about them - are they supposed to be superior in the way that the tulip label is? If so, why?

Thanks,

Tom

At least on my *Richter* experiment, if they are in a good shape, they do sound better.

The earliest stereo issues had the "stereo" in a red box. The text regarding "all rights reserved...", etc. around the edge of the disc is all in German, which begins with "Alle Hersteller..." (later tulip labels say "Made in Germany.."). Some of the earliest ones also had a red paper stereo sticker on the front.

These command higher prices, being the earliest issues and the ones I have mostly have quite good sound, but I think that these early recordings sound just as good on the slightly later tulip label issues. I don't necessarily think that there is anything particularly "magic" about the very earliest pressings.

Chris, are the tulip pressings generally better than the later pressings?

...Richter record in a pile of unsorted material and played it. I didn't even clean it, and it played very well. I have no idea where I got it, as often happens with guys who have tons of records.

Yes, I think that they are better. I should have been more clear. What I meant was that I don't hear much difference between the two different tulip labels.

I know 3 guys with what I consider tons of records: 47,000, 28,000 and 11,000. I have around 3K and don't consider that to be tons, although I am not sure where everyone of them came from. Where do you fit? :-)

Permanent collection about 4000, about 1200 not listened to, in discard pile, or otherwise detached. Many of mysterious origin - they just show up and stay!

To my ears the tulips are better! I buy them every chance I get. There are some fantastic performances too.

I found 2 copies that looked near mint, but they didn't play very well. I am still on the prowl for a clean copy. I thought his playing was excellent!
