All for want of a fuse-holder cap! (HK 800+ rcvr)

Recently picked up a tattered Harman/Kardon 800+ quad receiver.

After getting all the way through to the full test phase with speakers I discovered that even when set for 2-channel operation (4 amplifier sections summed into 2 channels) this receiver needs fuses in both the FRONT and REAR speaker positions to output sound to the speakers. Sounds great through headphones!

As luck would have it this unit came missing 2 of the fuse caps. I managed to recycle one from the PS because that fuse holder was busted up, so replaced it with a spare that fit. So now I just need 1 more!

But it's an odd size and every cap I've found is smaller diameter in the threaded portion.

Markings indicate "SATO Japan" and 10A, 250V on the busted up fuse holder. I did locate SATO on the web and they are still in business and it looks like they still make this holder.

However, I don't really feel like setting up an account just to order 1 part. Not unless I have to.

If anyone has any leads as to where I might find one in Portland, Oregon or via web or from your junk drawer! Your help would be appreciated.

Hide full thread outline!

I save those caps when scapping gear, so I'd need the thread dia..

I'm in Vancouver, can drop it of at Jamac if closer.

For years I've been holding 3 or 4 of those caps along some other H/K parts. I finally got tired of 'no replies' to my ads, as well as looking at them, and tossed them out.

It doesn't help, but "sorry". BTW, I'm in Portland too.

Oh, the torment!!!!!

And did you know Cascade Surplus is out of business now too? I was just there last week looking for this cap and they had already dumped the bin of salvaged fuse holders!

OD of the threaded portion is 9.88 mm (see pic in orig. post)

Overall length is 17.57 mm.

Not the biggest hurry. If you go by JAMAC often that could work. I'm in SW PDX.

Otherwise I have Tuesdays and Thursdays free to meet up.

Thanks,
Dogwan

Summed up from another thread over on AK

"Recently picked up an abused Harmon/Kardon 800+ quad receiver from CL for $20. Seller was a nice old gent who was a scrounger and knew very little other than it powered on and was missing fuse caps for 2/4 (right side) of the speaker lines.

After a few weeks of it sitting just inside the front door I finally got around to checking it out and couldn't get any power. Upon opening it up I found that someone had done some serious hacking. One of the transformers (I picked this up because of the twin power supply) has been clipped. The main power fuse holder was broken and electrical taped back together. The leads to the fuse holder were broken and twisted back on without solder. Oy vey!

Other than that I haven't done much exploring. I surmise that something happened to one of the channels and it probably kept blowing fuses. Whoever hacked it probably just cut that transformer and used the other side {L-front and back} as {left and right}.

The reason I grabbed this is because aside from all the extra quad circuitry there is a dedicated switch to keep it in 2 channel mode at 55w/ch with the twin power supply.

This weekend I went in and DeOxit'd all controls, downloaded the service manual, and replaced the busted PS fuse holder.

After rewiring the clipped transformer I slowly brought it up on a Variac while constantly checking the voltages on the transformer secondaries and comparing the two transformers. I kept a very close eye on the one that had the primary leads clipped. Got all the way up to full line voltage with no abnormalities.

Next I checked and adjusted the DC offset. Then I plugged an Ipod into the aux. and then plugged in a pair of beater headphones ..... AND got glorious sound!

Then I ran it using headphones only in ever increasing lengths of time with cool down periods. The next day when I was confident everything was stable I hooked it up to some speakers and ......NO sound!

Well, here's where it gets interesting. On Saturday I stumbled across an HK 100+ receiver on CL for $25 which I picked up thinking I could use it for spare parts if needed. After getting frustrated not being able to figure out why the 800+ would output sound on the headphones, but not speakers I set it aside and played with the 100+.

It was only while playing with the 100+ did I come to find out that even when switched into 2-channel "stereo" mode it still needed fuses in both the front and back speakers for the front speakers to work. I speculate that the fuses are in series before the 4 amp sections are summed into 2 channels.

Now the frustrating part is they used different fuse holders from the 100 to the 800 series amps. So now I am one lousy fuse screw on cap away from a full test! AND it's a metric size!

It should be fun comparing the sound signature of the two receivers when I get them both up and running."

I doubt you can buy one from the manufacturer. Most have large minimums. They may refer you to a distributor who will sell in small quantities.

I will check my junk drawerm I may have one.

Never was the same after Gary left and they moved from Denver ave.
I found all kinds of neat old stuff there. I doubt that they had metric
holders anyway, they seemed stricktly USA surplus.

Yeah, was at j-mac today, go there 2-3 times/mo. But I can
mail it to you, might be the best option. Have to find one first.

If you don't have one yet, I'm sure my junk box will yield one. In fact, I think I just pulled one from a junker Kenwood today...

No, still haven't found one yet.

Looks like such a common size. But everyone that has been confident they could pull one has found that when they actually put a caliper on them they don't "size" up. Ha.

You can replace the entire fuse holder! Get Radio Shack Catalog #: 270-364.

Yes, I know that.

But, because of the larger size, the punch outs in the chassis are larger and the contemporary fuse holders (I have some of the RS ones) which are plastic bodied and not Bakelite will not mount securely.

Email with your address and one will go out tomorrow. Fits the H-K 730 and Marantz 4240, which happened to be nearby. There's also a style with the same thread, but shorter threaded section and no spring inside. It will fit, but it's just short of making contact. And of course many other thread sizes, all of which I found before this one... but hoarding pays off!
