...'cause you will never know what's inside!

I picked up a pair of homebrew speakers tonight....small cabinets that the owner said had 15" triaxials inside. Got 'em real cheap because that's all I could afford.

What's inside you ask?

Mint condition Altec 602D Duplex speakers with the N-3000-E crossovers!

There's nothing more exciting in vintage hi-fi than opening up an old, unlabeled or home-built speaker cabinet to see what's inside. I have found everything from the worst junk drivers to Western Electric.

The thing to keep in mind is that the quality or size of the cabinet doesn't always tell the whole story. In other words, don't judge a book by its cover.

I love it when I grab a set of unknown behemoths and lo I find some very nice components tuck inside.... same thing with some of the consoles I have found over the years,, some are duds, some are keepers....

Hi, Phil

I know what a 601 is, but what is a 602?

Best wishes,
David

...15" "Duplex" (Coaxial) speaker with a multicell tweeter and N-3000-E crossover.

Very cool!

The guy who sold them to me made the cabinets himself way back when, and I am wondering how he thought they sounded good...the cabinets are way too small for these speakers! They are approx. 18" wide, 10" deep and 20" tall!

Probably another example of Beranek's Law:

It has been remarked that if one selects his own components, builds his own enclosure, and is convinced he has made a wise choice of design, then his own loudspeaker sounds better to him than does anyone else's loudspeaker. In this case, the frequency response of the loudspeaker seems to play only a minor part in forming a person's opinion.

L.L. Beranek, Acoustics (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1954), p.208.
