I do not have any experience with vintage gear. These two amps are different power but I believe the Marantz likely has enough for the pair of HED 1230's (Cerwin-Vega) I just purchased. I was just wondering which might have better sound and/or build? (Marantz $110; Sansui $75 but comes with A-700 Tuner and deck, neither of which I really need.) Thank you.

for your suggestions and info. The Marantz 2230 was in too rough of shape for me to consider. And I shied away from the Sansui based on info and too far to drive. I ended up getting a very well cared for Marantz 1530 for an amazing price. Rated same power as 2230 but a few pounds lighter so perhaps PS not as beefy. But speakers are Cerwin Vega HED 1230's so hopefully won't require ultimate current.

here is something to help you out a bit on that.
If the power supply waveform isn't pretty, neither is the sound in most cases.

I spent one summer cavorting in the beautiful Saginaw Steering Gear plant back in the 70's. As if working in the plant wasn't special enough I also contracted food poisoning from a nearby (Bridgeport?) Mexican restaurant. What a fun 12 hrs. in the plant those were the next day!

I would guess.........., posted on October 30, 2009 at 12:18:21

better sounding would only be one's opinion at this level of performance & matching speakers is much more important.

Don't know much about the Sansui but that particular Marantz is considered by many to be one of the best sounding ones.

Either one, you may have to put some money into it to get it up to specs. I would put my money in the Marantz.

You can drive Cerwin-Vega speakers with anything. Just go with the one you like the most.

You might consider buying & thus self-trialing Both. Listening for oneself is the ONLY way to know for certain which you might prefer with your speakers in your home, or if they even still function properly after all these years (many older HiFi units require restoration service & that is one reason Why they are offered for sale). Then, if you do not desire to keep both (I have 4 active self-restored Hi-fi systems in my home) you could re-sell (including the tuner & tape you presently do not want) for what you paid = no audition fees.
