Looks like the Gates Cyclon 2V/5AH "X" cells(4 in series) lead acid batts in my Audio Control RTA are bad, any suggestions on something better/cheaper?. These are 1.75" dia. round X 2.90" long ea.. Batt. compatment is 2"x 4"x 6".

The new batts. will have to be compatible with the existing charge
circuit which I assume is trickle overnight style.

AFAIK Gates are a variation on sealed lead-acid (SLA), so those are usually charged from a supply that combines current-limiting and voltage regulation. Current limit is something like C/5 (where C is ampere-hour rating), and the final float voltage is around 2.3 to 2.4 volts per cell. Cells with a different chemistry will require a very different charger.

A local electrical/electronic supplier (the kind of place that's located in an industrial park and sells a little of everything) should have a selection of SLA batteries. If they don't stock 4V or 8V batteries, they'll have catalogs and may be able to bring some in cheaper than you can. Googling 4V SLA turned up some made by Power-Sonic, like the PS-445. Capacity is similar (4.5 AH), and it might even fit in the compartment.

Thanks, kinda decided to go with orig. type due to the 8V and
charging circuit. Atbatt. com has them for about 10 bucks ea.
and free shipping. Some on ebay also but jigher shipping.

The official Gates batt.# when searching is 0800-0004.

If you want advice, why do you assume all readers of your post know what it is (I certainly don't! :-)) )?

Without knowing anything about your pertiklar situation (but knowing something about SLAs), it would seem you will have to buy some more batteries from Gates - so that they fit the space you've described?

Then again, one has to wonder why the designer chose to use 8v (4 x 2v) as the DC rail ... and not 9v?

Regards,

Andy

It's a Real Time Analyzer; Audio Control has been making those for eons. With a big LED matrix display, so it'll draw too much current to be suitable for 9V battery operation. SLA cells seem like a reasonable choice since in bench use they'll just float, and don't need as sophisticated a charger as NiCd or NiMH cells. I'm guessing there are applications where running for a long time off battery is required, like noise surveys, or maybe just roaming around a venue tweaking speaker positions and EQ.

Thanks for that, the batt. run time is about 4 hrs., full
charge time 10 hrs. Batt's only charge with unit OFF and plugged in.
