...by this Yamaha receiver. It's now functioning as a combination 1) Phono preamp, 2) FM tuner, and 3)Headphone amplifier in my system, feeding the analog signal sources to my principal preamp, a Lexicon MC-12. There are separable preamp output/power amp input jacks on the rear and I use the preamp output. Its FM guts appear equivalent to those of a 1990-ish Yamaha TX-350 component tuner. The reception is par excellence in my neck of the woods (actually "neck of the LA basin") and the sound is warm, clear, and shows a deep soundstage.

The headphone output is a little warm and soft, but not at all unpleasant- a little excess of the ol' "Natural Sound" effect.

And how are the 'modest needs' of the FM stage being met? , posted on October 20, 2016 at 14:40:18

That is, are you feeding it with a multi-path free signal that is strong enough to give full quieting, on all desired stations?

Do you know?

I use a very similar model in our 'family room' (albeit rarely) for FM radio to good effect.

If present, use the recording O/Ps of the tape monitor loop to completely bypass the receiver's line section.

Your comment is noted; I did listen carefully to the outputs of the "PREAMP OUT" and the REC OUT and felt they were very close in sonic character. I want to maintain the volume control, handy to trim the output for the differing sensitivities of different phono cartridges.
