I have a Modeferri modded MR78 recently tuned & aligned by McIntosh. I recently used it to burn in a PS Audio phono preamp buy running the signal thru a KAB "reverse RIAA" box. Ran it for about a week. After hooking back up to system, the MR78 is not pulling in signal like it use to. It acts like there is no antenna hooked up to it. Checked my connections to my outside antenna and they are all tight and secure. Is it possible I damaged something in my tuner? I just got this thing tweaked at McIntosh and waited four months to get it back-- I'm not happy...

I seriously DOUBT it was the reverse RIAA which did anything to your MR-78, posted on November 10, 2009 at 09:42:07

I tried to find the "reverse RIAA" box on the cluttered KAB site, but couldn't locate it. What a mess!

If KAB's is anything like the one Haggerman sells, it's simply a passive frequency filter, and shouldn't have caused your McIntosh issues. I'd start by calling Kevin at KAB and talking to him. I hear he's a great guy, and very helpful.

The next thing I'd do is call McIntosh service again. Find out if their service is covered under warrantee, since it was just there. If it's not, and you have to pay and wait again, I'd send it to Terry DeWick instead.

Good luck.

Hi, varkdriver:

Sorry to hear about the apparent trouble.

I believe that Dick Modaferri is not that hard to reach for assistance.

OTOH, I have never ever had to burn in a phono preamp. Why would this be necessary?

You can see that I am something of a skeptic at heart. Burn in cables?

The only thing I typically 'burn-in' are some of the meals at home when I am distracted editing my live recordings.

And, forgive the question, but who recommended that you connect the tuner to a phono preamp in the manner described?
