Some poster over at Audio Karma hinted at where the meter lights were in this thing (Marantz 2020 tuner). I took the cover off and can't understand where the meter lights are and how to dig them out and replace them. Could anybody here explain?

Hi, rivieraranch:

Only a mere guess on my part, but it could be that there are horizontal, fuse-type lamps mounted within the meter housing on the lower portion.

To access them normally requires removal of the meter itself or at least lifting it up and out of the unit. The front lens on the meter may be hald in-place by clear tape and if so, then slice through it with a razor blade and carefully lift off the cover piece, watching out that you do not touch the needle of the movement or mess with it in any way.

The lamp may be visible and if so, then perhaps you can snip it out or carefully unsolder it with a very low wattage iron. If it is a genuine fuse-type lamp, it should be removable with a little push, but BE CAREFUL.

OTOH, sometimes a lamp is inserted from the back of a meter housing, but in most Japanese receivers with meters, what I have described above is quite the norm.

Please let us know what you do discover inside, though!

Good luck to you!

And a couple Pioneers of mine use miniature bulbs seated within rubber blocks. Following the wires leads to discovery. The rubber lamp mounts need to be pried or popped out, revealing the lamp within. Then simply push bulb out of rubber mount & replace with a new bulb & re-insert rubber mount; I find my replacement bulbs at either a local Radio Shack or Auto Parts store depending on measured supply voltage & lamp size/shape. Fuse lamp replacements are either Automobile Dome lamps or Automobile Tester Probe lamps (kind where clip lead connects to Automobile chassis metal & probes' point causes internal lamp to light when Battery voltage is found in wiring).

Thanks for posting but this does not help me at all. I already took the cover off of this thing and cannot see, cannot reckon, cannot imagine what to do. This is damnable design that nobody could figure out. I need specific information about this tuner and why it was so stupidly designed that it is not obvious how to change the stupid bulbs.
