I am wondering if I should buy one to see, but $100 on supposition is tough to justify.

My understanding is HD radio uses the same frequencies as regular am/fm, is that correct?

$85.91 on Amazon, free shipping. You'll need an amp and speaker.

The Sony frequently discussed here is NOT a radio in the classic use of the term. It is an AM/FM tuner, and will require a separate amplifier and speakers. As long as you are aware of that, then, as Neff said, the Sony will likely do a better job for you. Provided you are willing to at least use an antenna. Seems some posters of late believe that's an option.

I hope I didn't insult your intelligence, but after reading some of the "reviews" of the Sony HD on Amazon, it seems some people were surprised at what they got, and wanted to know where the speaker was.

And yes, the HD signal is on the same frequencies as standard am/fm.

Absolutely superior reception. The Sony is a sensitive machine! Audio is less, but...........

I bought one used from an Inmate here, and Analog FM sounded good, but HD, which almost all FM stations are now, sounded thin. I think it's the fault of HD Radio being crappy. I'm getting mine modded, with a Forced-Analog option, to bypass the HD which it tunes to by default, if it's there. Reception was great, quiet, with only the little wire antanna that came with it. I'll report about the Mod when I get it back.

Most FM stations in my area are not HD. Not yet, anyway. My Sony, while decent, sounds thin on all FM, HD or not. At least compared to my other tuners, anyway.

That switch sounds like a good idea, and I've seen it on a few Sony mod pages. When I get around to cutting mine open, I'll add that switch.

Thanks.
