Son is about to deploy. He'll be away for Christmas and his birthday and I want to get him a sturdy portable SW radio (with AM and FM) before he leaves. Any recommendations so he can listen to BBC and VOA broadcasts?

Size and weight are a factor. Sturdy, too. He'll be in rough conditions.

Any and all help appreciated.

i, too, have a Sony ICF2010 and though it is an amazing radio, I can't recommend it for 'rough' duty.
If used on batteries, you will find the holder for the 3 'D' cells which power it to be inadequate and fragile.
Also, check out the size of this one and you may find it too large for a guy going on deployment.
Sound out of the speaker is only so-so but can be fixed with earphones.

Hi, Sam:

I rely upon my trusty ICF-2010 whenever I travel places.

You may find a used one somewhere.

I paid $5 for the one I own and found the proper power supply "Wall Wart" to operate it (sourced from Sony for about $20).

Unfortunately, IMHO, there is not much on SW that is very interesting these days, certainly NOT like it once was about twenty years ago!

Happy Listening, anyway!
