From what I've read, it's Not High Def, many have said it is thin. Would someone please explain?

Actually, the "HD" stands for "Hybrid Digital" (nt), posted on September 28, 2009 at 05:06:58

I've noticed a lot of good sounding stations lately in San Francisco area, even the pop stations. Many of them brag that they have HD Radio, whatever that is, their signals sound exceptionally good and uncompressed.

It's a switch on a pissy small clock radio looking thingy that says'' DAB''.
When you turn that switch back and forth between FM analogue AND ''DAB'', you begin to involuntarily and hysterically start laughing and rolling around on the ground on how BAD ''HD RADIO'' is.

All the best!.

That would be "laughing my ass off"!

"HD Radio" is simply a name. It does NOT mean "High Definition.", posted on September 15, 2009 at 07:28:22

Of course, if the average consumer *thinks* it means "High-Definition Radio" the marketing people won't mind one bit. In reality, it is a method used to piggyback relatively low-definition digital signals on top of existing analog modulation systems. It allows AM stations one "extra" HD channel and allows FM stations as many as three extra HD channels. The idea is that *eventually* everyone will have HD radios so the analog channels can be dropped if desired. This will allow higher bit-rates in the HD channels. (Good luck with THAT idea!)

Of course, this explanation only applies in the US. (I'm not sure about Canada. Perhaps a "neighbor to the North" can explain the situation there.)

Do NOT confuse "HD Radio" with any sort of serious attempt to broadcast audio in "High Definition." It simply isn't the case.

Thanks for your reply! Surely the HD Radio people are relying on that confusion.

As for Canada, I don't know for sure but I don't think they've adopted HD as implemented in the US. There's a semi-local Cnadian station still broadcasting in stereo AM so I think they've stuck with the older standards. FWIW, I'd rather have stereo AM than another lower rez, sideband splattering, crap programming AM channel.

yes, "hybrid digital"... like digital mutants ;-) (nt), posted on September 17, 2009 at 03:49:24

So what happened to AM stereo?
PS. Crap programming is here to stay.

As I understand it, HD and stereo AM aren't compaitble with each other.

As for crap AM programming, yes it appears that it's indeed here to stay. I was simply opining that one channel stereo crap is better than two channels of mono crap.
