Hello All, I lurk in a lot of these forums (mainly Computer Audio) but rarely post. I recently got an Anthem PRE 2L. It sounded fine except the left channel was lower in volume. Had to deploy balance control to almost 9 o'clock. I got some new EH 6922's & balance is normal. These tubes are a tad more upfront & less dimensional than the Tesla E88CC's that were in it. But I've got no complaints, they sound fine. I can see rolling in some alternatives down the road after I learn more about various NOS options. But I will use this unit in bypass mode any time I turn the TV on. So, maybe I'll end up sticking with the EH's.

My question is: what is the break/burn-in situation with these tubes ? Will they change much ? Any other recommendations ?

Thanks, & enjoy the Holiday weekend !

Greg

Hello Greg,

Yes, EH tubes need at least 50 to 100 hours to stabilize. This phenomenon is easily measurable with small EH tubes, and one would guess that the run-in at the factory is not super long.

That's really interesting - what is you you are measuring?

Thanks for sharing the info.

Hello Jim,

I will setup a given tube in a test jig with a regulated supply, CCS load, and then monitor the plate voltage.

For some reason, the EH tubes wander around more in the first tens of hours than other new brands. Even something like a 6J32P hits its marks immediately in comparison to the EH EF86.

The NOS Tesla ECC88 that I've tried hit the mark as soon as 5 hours of burning in, whereas the EH 6922 was still wandering all over the place before settling down at around 50 hours of burning in. As the matter of fact I thought I had a bad batch of EH.

Who did you buy from? Did they test the tubes, before shipping them out?

Ever hear of cathode "sleeping sickness"? A competent vendor knows how to deal with the matter and not give the customer a "headache".

Thought they were a very significant step up from the Tesla originally in there. One EH went noisy recently, and so now I have two EH and two Tesla in there. Sounds fine to me!

Cost was $25-$30 per tube at four tubes. I am comfortable with the outlay. I hope the noise issue is not a usual event though. After a year or so it is in the category of a premature failure.
